This exquisite hand-colored engraving is Plate No. 398 from Phytanthoza Iconographia, the monumental botanical work by Johann Wilhelm Weinmann (1683–1741). Published in Regensburg between 1737 and 1745, the series is celebrated for its pioneering use of color-printed mezzotint and detailed depictions of hundreds of plant species.

Depicted Plant: Clematis Species

The illustration focuses on various forms of the Clematis genus, known for its twining vines and showy flowers. The plate showcases four distinct varieties, labeled a through d, each delicately rendered with remarkable botanical accuracy.

  • a. Clematis caeruleo Pannonia / Herbe aux Genoux / Ungarische Waldreben
Likely refers to a Central European (Pannonian) clematis with bluish or violet-tinged flowers.
  • b. Clematis peregrina flore purpureo simplici
A clematis with simple, purple-hued flowers — elegant and understated.
  • c. Clematis peregrina foliis puri
A clematis variant with distinct or “pure” foliage, possibly indicating a cleaner leaf shape.
  • d. Clematis purpurea flore pleno suaviter
A richly double-flowered purple clematis, noted for its gently fragrant blossoms.

Weinmann’s botanical engravings are renowned for their blend of artistry and scientific rigor. This plate features:

  • Lush green foliage and vivid purple, pink, and cream blossoms
  • Careful botanical structure of stems, buds, and flowers
  • Latin and vernacular plant names with elegant script annotations

Weinmann’s Phytanthoza Iconographia was one of the first large-scale works to combine accurate botanical observation with full-color printing. It laid the groundwork for future botanical publications and remains a cornerstone of botanical illustration.
