The surroundings of Haarlem; Map by Johannes Dou en Steven van Broeckhuysen, From the atlas                        ‘ Hoogheemraadschap van Rijnland’ from 1647. Third, revised edition from 1746 by Melchior Bolstra.

After the silting up of the mouth of the Rijn near Katwijk the Spaarne became the most important drain in Central Holland . From the thirteenth century onwards the sluices at the Spaarnedam were opened at low tide to let the superfluous water flow into the IJ. The sea-side resort Zandvoort, which can be found on very early maps of Holland, is depicted in this map as a conventional fishing village.
